Frontside Bigspin

I started wakeskating because It was just something to do that would keep my time on the water fresh but every time I’d jump on a board I’d have endless fun! Next thing I knew I couldn’t stop thinking about wakeskating. It’s really addictive, probably because the smallest things can make your day (Like a nice clean Ollie or a smooth Shove-it or something technical like a Frontside Bigspin). What is also nice is that you don’t have to take beatings to progress. A Frontside Bigspin is basically a blend of a Frontside 360 Shove-it and Frontside 180, so if you don’t have those two tricks under your belt then go get ‘em.1. Unhook, ease off of your edge and find a nice smooth spot to take off from.2. Now pop into a Frontside 180 but at the same time scoop the tail of the

Varial Flip

This is an advanced move. It’s probably one of the hardest tricks I’ve landed behind a kite. Make sure you have the two parts to this trick on lock: a Backside Shove-it and a Kickflip. This move is just an integration of the two.

1. There are two environmental details you’ll want to have in mind in order to land this trick. First, steady wind. Second, a smooth rolling wave. Once you have these two, you want to get your speed up, unhook, and bear off the wind. In fact, in this sequence I’m going almost directly at my kite. Probably about 10 degrees upwind from straight downwind.2. Get your stance right. My back foot is all the way back on the board. My front foot is 1/3-1/2 back from the nose and very close to the edge of the board. This is important to get

Wakeskating Instructional

Every once in awhile someone will ask what I am riding and why. I give them my brief “This is a Wakeskate” speech, then send them out on the water to try it for themselves. In the most literal sense, wakeskating is skateboard-based tricks on the water. For me personally, it’s more than that. It’s a different state of mind. I’ve spent untold hours reading magazines and watching videos all for the fix of nailing a new move. When you do it’s contagious. Every person who’s ever borrowed my skate has come off the water smiling. I’ve converted quite a few people to the joys of wakeskating this way and have yet to meet someone who’s had a bad “first” session on a wakeskate. It seems the allure of wakeskating is that with little or no experience someone can go out and have meaningful progression while still having fun. The wipeouts aren’t nearly as heavy as wakestyle kiteboarding and occasionally you’ll get the o

Wakeskate Shoes

“I got them for super cheap and I thought they would be sick.”—Jason StoneIt’s funny. Until Tracy Kraft and I started working on the SBC wakeskate article, and we took some photos of my shoe graveyard, I really had no idea how many wakeskate shoes I’d gone through. Lets do a quick rundown of what the deal is. Originally I skated barefoot. I even think SBC ran an image of me boosting an air barefoot. Pretty classic. It makes skating easy to begin with, but shoes make the more advanced moves possible. They offer more grip and when you’re doing flip tricks the last thing you want is to have the board flip over half way and you land on the fins barefoot! My first real pair of skate shoes were given to me by Mauricio. He found a cheap pair of purple Airwalks at a Ross store here on Maui. Those were classics. All puffy, they would soak up tons of water. One session I got slammed really hard and one popped off.
Skimboard Varial Flip

“Any tips for landing the impossible?” I’m going to have to say “complete luck.” Because if I can land it, anyone can. Seriously, a skimboard Varial Flip requires basic fundamentals like any other trick. For the Varial Flip, you need a solid Ollie, and it helps to have your Pop Shove-it transition down so you know what to do when the board is in the air. You must be aggressive on the Ollie and pop it almost to the point where you think your skimmy will fly away. It helps if the wind is only 10 to 15 mph, so your skimmy doesn’t get blown away from you. Then, like any other strapless trick, with a little luck—or in my case, a lot—you’ll ride away feeling good. This trick simply evolved from the other tricks I do; it felt like the

Nose grab Frontside 720

The 720 has been described by Aaron Hadlow as one of the hardest tricks in kiteboarding. Here Andre Phillip throws in a Nose Grab for good measure.
Key pointersStep 1 Look for a good-sized wave that will buy you some first-class air time.Step 2 Flatten off and get a clean pop off the ramp.Step 3 Pull hard and spin to win. It helps to watch the horizon go around to keep yourself on axis.Step 4 Spot the runway and pull out your landing gear.Common Mistake and CorrectionCommon mistake is to try a 7 as if you are spinning two 360’s. If you haven’t committed to spinning a full 7 off the bat then you probably will never get all the

KGB off Kicker

KGB—Technically, this is a heelside Back Roll with a backside 360. I do them differently than most people. I like to initiate the KGB by doing a Mexican Roll (throwing your head under the lines) instead of the usual backroll where you throw your head over your shoulder. I find doing it that way to be more stylish and actually makes it easy to get the pass. This is also easier to do when hitting a kicker that gives you height without much pop. Step 1: You want lots of board speed for this move. Get lots of speed when heading towards the ramp. Step 2: Wave/kicker selection. You’ll want to head for a very steep ramp which will help you get inverted. Step 3: There are two mo

Nuke Tantrum

The Nuke grab is getting a lot of press these days. It can be a frustrating grab though. Some people get it right away. Others hate on it ’cause they just can’t grab it proper! I always thought throwing a nuke grab while upside down looks sick. So here is a how to for the Nuke Tantrum.

Key pointers
Step 1: Learn proper Tantrums. Square off to the wave/kicker right before the lip and stand tall. If you have drama with the Tantrum make sure to throw your head up at the sky and square up the board to the kicker.
Step 2: Have Nuke grabs on lock. Stretch before your session to grab Nuke. (Try Indy Tantrums first to feel how it is to grab during a Tantrum.)
Step 3: Suck your knees up to your chest to start rotation and grab Nuke.

313

1: Ride with your kite in low position with good speed.
2: Go a little downwind to load the power of the kite and at the same time put your kite a little up, but still in the power zone and unhook the bar, just before you have unhooked the bar make sure you do a good pop.
3: With strong pop, when you almost get out of the water, go in a forward rotation, so that you do not have to use as much strength when you pass the bar in the air.
4: After you go out from the pop, twist a little bit so your hip and your legs are on the right side so you have good hip rotation, so that when you turn the 360 degrees faster and easier the other way.
5: To do a good 313 you must over rotate your hips, so load them up to the opposite direction to have more spring when attempting the pass. As you reach the ap

Mobe 7

The Back Mobe 7 or Mobe 7 is a Mobe 720° . It 's a Backmobe followed by a 360° frontside handle pass. This is one of the most advanced handle pass trick where the rider has to pass the bar 2 times before landing. Riders like Aaron Hadlow and Kevin Langeree were some of the first to perform this trick in competition and score some good points.

To do this trick, the rider need to be able to land the Back Mobe

without any problems and also do some Back Mobe 5s ( Back Mobe landed toe -side) or Back Mobe to wrapped which will help in the progression to pass the bar before landing.
