Cabrinha’s Boys In The Hood – Day 5 We all woke up with high hopes since there was a possibility of a helicopter photo shoot. Melissa and I started cooking up breakfast while the boys started to perfect their tarp surfing in the parking lot. This is their new exciting thing to do, but after Matt Collins losing some skin on his toes due to tripping on the tarp and flying on to the concrete it ended fast. The forecast called for no wind and we could not feel even a hint of breeze. Lance, the photographer, Bob, the helicopter pilot and myself swapped calls back and forth trying to determine a prime location to shoot if the wind was to come up. We headed down to Big Winds for a little meet and greet and hang out at the shop. That is when we got the text from Lance “the wind shifted east and it might be blowing 12 to 17 at Stevenson”. We loaded the RV and drove to the Washington side of the Gorge just east of Stevenson. Kristen and her boyfriend Jake helped us walk out on the water where there was wind to launch. The group spread out to different locations. I was on the new Cabrinha race board designed by Alex Aguera and I flew up wind, others stayed near the area where we launched and others went downwind. Brandon and Matt Collins where throwing tricks in no wind as the helicopter flew just inches from there kites. We all ended the downwinder at Stevenson and just relaxed soaking in the sun once the wind died. Against all odds we pulled the heli shoot off! The rest of the day was nothing but smiles on everyone. We took our time as we started to drive to Portland. To end the night we had a nice pizza dinner. Tomorrow is a big day driving to Seattle for some course racing. Damo Stay tuned it might go something like this Day 6 kids strangle Damien!
Cabrinha’s Boys In The Hood – Day 6 This day turned out to be the big road trip day. We drove past Portland into Washington State, and past Seattle to Everett. Cabrinha had organized a race series in Jetty Island and we were there for their last event of the season. A lot of people came this weekend to enjoy the park and take part in the race. A 10-minute ferry ride took us to the island where we set up all of our Switchblades, 2011 Crossbows and 2011 Nomads for people to demo. We also had a good quiver of boards, the Custom, Caliber, Prodigy, S-Quad, the wakeskate and the new Cabrinha race board designed by Alex Aguera. Damien LeRoy gave an awesome course-racing clinic to all the participants before the start of the first race. The 5 race series turned out to be a lot of fun! Wally Gator did a great job at organizing the event. Kirsten and Damien were on the beach sending kites out and talking with local riders. People had the option to race in the race board division or the other board division (twin tips and surboards). Matt Collins raced on the Cabrinha production course board and finished 4th! Not bad considering this was his first time course racing and his competitors were all on custom boards and fins. Matt Elsasser and myself were racing on surfboards and Brandon was on his twintip. As the sun was setting we took the ferry back to the mainland. We ended the day with a good pasta dinner in the RV and finally fell asleep after giggling and laughing non-stop in our beds. Melissa
